How do I know if firewood is properly seasoned?
Properly seasoned firewood has a moisture content below 20%. Signs include: cracking or checking on the end grain, lighter weight than green wood, a hollow sound when two pieces are knocked together, and darkened, grayish appearance. All Cote firewood is dried to proper moisture levels for a clean, efficient burn.
What wood species are in your firewood mix?
Our premium hardwood mix contains primarily oak, maple, and ash — the best burning hardwoods available in New England. These dense species produce more BTUs, burn longer, and create better coals than softer woods. We avoid pine and other softwoods that produce excessive creosote buildup.
How much firewood do I need for a winter in Rhode Island?
Most Northern RI homeowners using a fireplace as a primary heat supplement burn 2–4 cords per winter. If you use your fireplace occasionally for ambiance, 1 cord is usually plenty for the season. If you heat primarily with a wood stove, plan on 4–6 cords. We're happy to advise based on your specific situation.
How far in advance should I order firewood?
We recommend ordering firewood in late summer or early fall (August–September) to ensure availability and allow time for delivery before cold weather arrives. Fall demand is high and we can sell out. We offer year-round delivery when available — call or order online to check current availability.
Where should I store my firewood?
Store firewood off the ground (on pallets or a rack) in a location with good air circulation. Cover the top to protect from rain and snow but leave the sides open to allow air flow. Keep firewood at least 5 feet from your home to prevent insect issues. A full cord measures 4 feet × 4 feet × 8 feet stacked.

I ordered a half cord of wood prior to the snowstorm that was coming. They delivered next day based on a delivery window of 9-12, the driver was courteous and promptly notified me he was on his way prior to arriving. I accidentally left an extra $100 in the cash payment I gave to the driver. Melissa called me back and was extremely honest about the overpayment. I got the refund for the overpayment. Who does that in 2026 off a Facebook Marketplace ad? It's refreshing to know there are still honest businesses out there! Will definitely consider doing business with Cote in the future.
